Then it started rattling like crazy when engaged. I also modified my condenser fan shroud so that in the winter, no puddles of water freez up and therefore freez solid the fan blades. I'd say don't worry about it until it really goes.

Before opening the hood to see if there is anything wrong with the AC compressor, start the Ram and turn the AC off and back on a few times. Do it somewhere quiet. Something else is the problem. Or, it may be turned by an independent belt. Inspect the belt to see if it is cracked or shiny. It could even be missing entirely without you noticing if it is an independent belt. The clutch is not getting a signal to turn on. This indicates some form of wiring problem.
