Spain and Germany face off in the final match of the Euro championship in Vienna on Sunday. Spanish fans have been waiting 44 years for their national team to bring home the title. Report: M.

Spain claimed their first major title for 44 years after winning Euro with a deserved victory over Germany. Liverpool striker Fernando Torres was Spain's goal hero, striking after 33 minutes when he cleverly lifted Xavi's pass over Germany keeper Jens Lehmann. Spain dominated the final throughout, with Torres heading against the post and Marcos Senna almost adding a second from close range after 80 minutes. Michael Ballack came close for Germany, shooting narrowly wide after the break. Germany were outclassed, and for captain Ballack his catalogue of misery in major finals continues having lost two Champions League finals and also been suspended for the World Cup final when they lost to Brazil. Match-winner Torres enhanced the reputation he forged at Liverpool last season, but this was an all-round effort for a side that is young enough to already be marked down among the favourites for the World Cup in South Africa.

England was the only seeded team not to qualify for the tournament proper, whereas Russia was the only unseeded one to qualify. The tournament also marked the debuts of Austria and Poland. The draw for the final tournament took place on 2 December , and saw Group C immediately labelled as the " group of death ", with Italy , France , Romania and the Netherlands competing for the two qualifying places. In contrast, Germany and Portugal were deemed to have an easy draw, as the tournament structure meant they could not meet Italy, France, the Netherlands or Spain until the final.

Zenit won the match 2—1, Pavel Pogrebnyak scoring just before half-time, before Danny doubled the Russians' lead just before the hour mark. The sending-off of Paul Scholes for handball in the 90th minute resulted in him missing Manchester United's opening game in their defence of the Champions League, a home tie against Villarreal. However, it was Spain who took the lead in the 33rd minute through Fernando Torres , who latched onto a through ball from Xavi , beat Philipp Lahm on the edge of the penalty area, and then clipped the ball over the advancing goalkeeper Jens Lehmann into the left-hand corner of the German goal. The game finished with no further goals and Spain won 1—0 to secure their second European Championship. Torres was named the man of the match. Spain's victory marked the start of a period of dominance for the team that saw them winning the FIFA World Cup in South Africa, and then retaining their European title at Euro The top two teams in each group, along with the two host teams, qualified for the sixteen-team finals.

Portsmouth won the match by a single goal, scored by Nwankwo Kanu in the 37th minute. Both sides had entered the competition in the third round and progressed to the final by winning five matches.
