On September 11, , two filmmakers making a documentary about a New York firefighter found themselves instead documenting the attacks in Lower Manhattan. Their footage -- raw, chaotic and nearly inconceivable -- offers a rare look into a day that continues to haunt the nation. Fire crews are on a call to a gas leak near the World Trade Center when the first plane hits. Jules Naudet and Chief Joseph Pfeiffer speed to the scene, as they had every day that summer, unaware of how deadly this day would be. In the North Tower lobby, fire chiefs set up the command post — while bodies and debris hit the ground outside. The second plane hits the South Tower. Battalion 1 and Jules Naudet experience the South Tower collapse, from inside its twin.

Filmmakers James Hanlon and the Naudet brothers were given permission by the New York City Fire Department to film a documentary about a probationary firefighter. They intended to make a film about the "probie's" first experiences as a firefighter. Pfeifer , was called out on a reported "odor of gas" at Church and Lispenard streets. As the Battalion 1 firefighters examined the supposed gas leak, American Airlines Flight 11 flew overhead. Turning his camera to the left to follow the plane, Jules Naudet taped one of only three known recordings of the first plane, American Airlines Flight 11 , flying into the North Tower Tower 1 of the World Trade Center during the September 11 attacks. The others were shot by Czech tourist Pavel Hlava and German Wolfgang Staehle , but both were filmed from farther away. The firefighters under the direction of Chief Pfeifer were the first responders on the scene. Naudet was allowed to follow the chief during the attempted rescue operation. After the first tower collapse, Benetatos, together with retired former fire chief Larry Byrnes, left the firehouse for World Trade Center.
