Aaron Rupar, a former Vox journalist who now works independently, was one of the journalists who had their Twitter accounts suspended last evening. Digiday spoke with Rupar to hear his thoughts on his Twitter suspension and what it means for his work and business. I was actually playing on the floor with my seven-month-old in the evening. My phone started blowing up. I was left to basically do some reporting, contacting other reporters and people who had also been banned as part of this wave of banishment to try and figure out what was going on.

With a blizzard in the Twin Cities closing day care on Thursday, Aaron Rupar was keeping an eye on his 7-month-old when he got a rush of texts from friends asking why he was suddenly banned on Twitter. After speaking with a Daily Beast reporter looking into the suspension, he started to figure it out. Twitter displayed a message stating that users cannot post the link, similar to the message in blocking users from sharing a New York Post story on Hunter Biden. Media outlets have taken the bans seriously. For independent reporters, a suspension, if permanent, would be a significant blow. After learning he was barred, Rupar said he found the contact of someone at Twitter who told him that the suspension was temporary and that the company is now determining how long his account will be offline. They also confirmed that the Elon Jet link was the reason for removal. A majority of respondents said the accounts should be back online right now. When he is reinstated, the suspension will probably change how Rupar operates on Twitter.

The Washington Post reported that many of the journalists had written about Musk banning the ElonJet account on Wednesday that tracked the movements of his private jet and had also been critical of Musk on Twitter. Some of the journalists had tweeted a link to the tracking account on Twitter rival Mastodon Social. Olbermann confirmed to Variety that he was first suspended — then permanently suspended — from Twitter and shared that his last tweets were in support of other banned journalists.

You spend a lot of sweat equity building something over many, many years and you see that vanish instantaneously for pretty spurious reasons. Had I known I certainly would not have chanced getting banned, but it just never occurred to me that simply linking to a public Facebook page could constitute a violation of this sort.
