It's a piece of free ongoing, independent web fiction by David Verburg that pulls together many crime and dark-fantasy tropes into a world that codifies genre tropes as reality, similar to what the author's previous novel series 'A Practical Guide to Evil' did with high fantasy. Jamie West's 'Death on the Pier', a charmingly nostalgic mystery that resurrects one of Britain's many lost theatres as its deuteragonist. Sena Desai Gopal's 'The 86th Village', a wonderfully atmospheric piece of climate-crime fiction reimagining the living nightmares many remote communities get subjected to when big-money ambition comes knocking. Hayley Scrivenor's 'Dirt Town', which was one of my favourite casts in crime fiction this year with such a brilliant take on its varied perspectives.
