Also, the study investigates whether their level of boredom differs depending on the variables of gender, grade level and selected academic track. While no significant difference was observed in the level of boredom depending on the gender variable, students' grade level and the chosen academic track led to significant differences. The ultimate goal of this approach is to better understand the life of an ordinary person who lived in the 16th century. The janissaries appear frequently in Ottoman history, both due to their contributions to the Ottoman campaigns and their involvement in responses to revolts occurring in different periods. In these latter in particular, the janissaries functioned as a position of a pressure group whose support was essential in the power struggles that occurred between competing political groups. Some research on the history of the janissary corps has been conducted. However, it has been observed that little work on the history of the corps, with the exception of highlights of their success and failure on the battlefields and of the rebellions they were involved in, has been done. The information available in existing historical sources is also limited in this regard. Hence, records that give details on the members of the janissary corps must be investigated to obtain fresh perspectives. This study contributes the literature by drawing a picture of the life of the particular janissary Mehmed bin Abdullah, who lived in the 16th century. A technique of intensive description was utilized to make sense of the information in the documents and to create a context. Thus, the study shows the kind of life that a person of time, who was like Mehmed and served in the military, lived outside of his occupation. The existence of expensive items of clothing including extremely expensive Venetian clothing and accessories for women, large amounts of Tripoli soap, basic food items such as clarified butter and rice in amounts that were more than a person could consume, constitute clear evidence that Mehmed was engaged in the trade of valuable textiles and food that were in high demand. Mehmed, indeed, was not the first or the only janissary to occupy himself with trade.
