We are working with original British genetics and are currently using bulls which date back at least 50 years; bringing new life to old bloodlines. These line bred cattle maintain the original identity of the Angus breed — setting the type. This unique herd provides grass finished beef for superior eating quality. The genetic strength of these line bred cattle, leads to uniformity and efficiency, and is the blueprint of the Native Angus breed - the way forward into the 21st Century.

For almost a hundred years, the name Aberdeen-Angus was familiar to most New Zealanders as one of our two premier beef cattle breeds. Historically, the Aberdeen-Angus was developed in the Scottish counties of Aberdeen and Angus in the northeast of Scotland during the early nineteenth century. A black polled breed, it was a much modified descendant of the original black Celtic cattle of the area, with an infusion of blood from animals introduced by Norse invaders. Its original purpose was to supply the English beef markets, but it quickly spread throughout the world, arriving in New Zealand in These first arrivals here were a bull and three cows imported by the Australian and New Zealand Land Company to Southland. These original animals were a small, short and stout breed, not greatly dissimilar to those we know today as the » Australian Lowline and this type was retained in New Zealand until the s.

Aberdeen Angus is a globally recognised cattle breed, native to the British Isles dating back to the 19th Century, prized for its taste and texture. For over twenty years, Dovecote Park have been the pioneers of Aberdeen Angus beef. Within Waitrose stores, our Angus beef is mainly sold at the service counter, with some pre-packaged available on shelf as well. They must be of British origin - meaning they have been born and reared on a British farm. These cattle are popular among our farmers due to their comparatively short finishing time, which coupled with their ease of calving and natural mothering instinct results in a higher percentage of offspring reaching maturity. Aberdeen Angus are a sturdy breed known for their excellent growth efficiency, and ability to finish on grass and forage based feed alone.
