In an oral history with the cast and team that launched OITNB into TV phenomenon status, Prepon was among the 23 people who spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about the early days of her character Alex, who came into Litchfield Penitentiary as the drug-smuggling ex-girlfriend of protagonist Piper, who had a fiance Jason Biggs on the outside. The final scene of the series saw the pair laughing together in a visitation room, as the real Piper and her husband, Larry Smith, made a cameo nearby.
Orange Is the New Black is arguably the most popular original programming Netflix has ever made. Piper Taylor Schilling has dealt with all kinds of trials and tribulations over the course of the series, and at the center of it all has been Alex Vause Laura Prepon , Piper's smuggling ex-girlfriend who got her into jail in the first place. While the story is fictional, it is loosely based on Piper Kerman's book of the same name, and Alex is based on Kerman's real-life lover, Catherine Cleary Wolters. Piper both the real and fictional versions went to jail because she was an accomplice of her girlfriend. TV's Piper was surprised to find that they ended up in the same prison.

Catherine Cleary Wolters doesn't just have problems with how the show romanticizes and sensationalizes her life, alex and piper orange is the new black, she also points out that it isn't based in truth at all. Now that Larry is out of the show and Piper and Alex have no obstacles to their romance, the relationship doesn't have the same sizzle. How did that episode come to you and can you talk about the decision to have her vanish on the plane?
Vauseman is the on-again, off-again relationship between Piper Chapman and Alex Vause. Piper and Alex met in a bar, around 10 years before the present day in prison. Piper claims that she is straight, but Alex manages to convince her to stay the night at her place. Alex and Piper have sex, but Piper gets confronted by Alex's ex, Sylvie, in the end, who punches Piper. Piper spends some time being mad at Alex but the pair eventually end up back together. Piper and Alex are happy together for a while but Piper eventually gets caught up in the drug ring that Alex works for, Alex asks her to carry a suitcase full of drug money once and Piper agrees but years later Alex names her at the trial because she is resentful of how their relationship ended. This is why they landed in prison together.
Before her arrest, Vause worked for an international drug cartel and was in a relationship with protagonist Piper Chapman , who once transported drug money for her during their travels. Vause is portrayed as the catalyst for Chapman's indictment. She is reunited with her ex-lover in federal prison, nearly a decade after the events that led to their breakup. Her relationship with Chapman is reignited, as they carry out a tumultuous love affair in prison. Vause is noted for her pragmatism, forthrightness, wit and veiled vulnerability. She is a main character in seasons one, three, four, five, six, and seven and a recurring character in season two. Wolters met Kerman in in Northampton, Massachusetts , becoming friends around the time Kerman graduated from Smith College. Kerman wrote in her memoir that Wolters was part of a "clique of impossibly stylish and cool lesbians in their mids". In her interview with Vanity Fair , Wolters said that they were not girlfriends but friends with benefits, a notion with which Kerman disagreed, stating that they may have different perspectives about their time together and their relationship was complicated.

She was an inmate at Litchfield Penitentiary and the "prison wife" of protagonist Piper Chapman as they aren't legally married. She was transfered to Ohio in Season 7. She is portrayed by Laura Prepon. Alex Vause is snarky, manipulative and street smart. While she does associate with other inmates, she keeps to herself emotionally, although she isn't afraid to fight back if provoked.
