There, Renee befriended Lucy, who happened to be the ring's leader. Lucy apparently gained Renee's trust in order to have an abduction for the both of them be successfully staged. Eventually, the ring catches the attention of Hotch and his BAU team when the bodies of two of the ring's victims are discovered after a car accident kills the driver, one of the ring's members.
