A long-serving member of Worcestershire County Council has died, aged Andy Roberts represented Warndon Parish and the former firefighter had been known for his role in overseeing Children's Services.
Hundreds of people attended the funeral of Andrew Roberts, known as Andy, who was a popular Worcestershire county councillor and Worcester city councillor representing Warndon. He was also previously the assistant chief fire officer of Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service. Alongside family and friends, dignitaries such as Worcester MP Robin Walker, fellow county and city councillors and fire officers, who arrived in a fire engine, were there to pay tribute to his life. The coffin of Cllr Roberts, who died aged 74, was decorated with white flowers. It was draped with a cloth branded with the initials HWFR. The service took place at Image: NQ.

Mr Roberts was a long standing member of the council and a well respected and liked figure in the community. He worked hard for the people of Warndon Parish as well as serving on multiple boards for the Council during his tenure. He leaves behind wife Frances, who he married in , children Wayne and Victoria, and granddaughter Kim. He joined the County Council in , representing Claines until and gaining a seat on the city council the following year. He was then elected to serve Warndon Parish in , the same year he was named Mayor of Worcester. He also played for Worcester Rugby Colts and went on to achieve great success at under 19 and 21 levels with the Hereford and Worcestershire and West Midlands sides. His many years of service to the Hospice in several different roles saw him honoured by being appointed to the Council of Governors. The leader said Coun Roberts championed the needs of children and families and gave a lifetime of service to Worcestershire.

Council leader Simon Geraghty said he "championed the needs of children and families and gave a lifetime of service to Worcestershire". Mr Roberts was first elected in and remained a councillor up until his death. He took over as Lead Member for Children and Families after the service had been rated "inadequate" by Ofsted and led the department to a rating of "good" in July this year. Mr Geraghty said he was "immensely grateful" for his work during this "challenging period". Mr Roberts also had a distinguished career in the fire service, joining as a cadet in and retiring as Assistant Chief Fire Officer 37 years later. He was elected Mayor of Worcester in and also served as a school governor and volunteered for St Richard's Hospice.
