There are supposedly 28 gems on the island at the start of the story. The Gems take the forms of humans, but with bodies made of polished gemstone that differ depending on their material composition. Most of them have hair, eyes, and nails the same color as their gemstone bodies and white skin made from a plant-based powder they apply to protect from sea breeze and harsh sunlight. While their hair may look solid, it can be manipulated similarly to human hair cut, tied, braided, etc. Apart from the adult Kongo , their appearances take the form of androgynous young teens standing at cm on average.

Each Gem is assigned a role in order to fight against the Lunarians, a species who attacks them in order to shatter their bodies and use them as decorations. Phosphophyllite, also known as Phos, is a young and fragile Gem who dreams of helping their friends in the war effort. Instead, they are told to compile an encyclopedia because of their delicate condition. After begrudgingly embarking on this task, Phos meets Cinnabar, an intelligent gem who has been relegated to patrolling the isolated island at night because of the corrosive poison their body creates. After seeing how unhappy Cinnabar is, Phos decides to find a role that both of the rejected Gems can enjoy. Houseki no Kuni follows Phos' efforts to be useful and protect their fellow Gems. The Admirabilis are said to be the flesh, inheriting the ability to expand and pass down their knowledge; The Gems the bone, returning to the land after having made a contract anime about gems another living species and gaining the ability to live for millennia; and the Lunarians as the spirit, forever wandering, attempting to regain its flesh and bone. It first began airing on October 7, and ran until December 23, The series has been licensed by Amazon Prime and later Sentai Filmworks for a physical release in the west. The anime covers most of the events of the first 36 chapters of the manga. The anime skips the events in chapters 33 to 35 with only half of chapter 32 and 36 being adapted. Phosphophyllite , the youngest of the gems, is extremely brittle with a hardness of three and a half, and its toughness is weak, making it unsuitable for combat. Also, there is no aptitude for other work. Only the habit of the mouth was just in front of me, which was a genuine omission.
It follows the Lustrous — immortal humanoid life forms who are the embodiments of gemstones — who defend themselves against the Lunarians, who seek to harvest their bodies for decorations. Phosphophyllite is the youngest of the Lustrous, and is given the task to assemble a natural history since they are too brittle to fight. Orange created the series with 3D animation as a base, a decision made partially due to the difficulty in depicting translucent gemstones using hand-drawn animation. While the manga is more ambiguous and subtle, the anime had to be clear on a single viewing, so Phos was given more close-up shots and repeated lines to give them a larger presence and more easily identifiable goals. The series was well received by critics, frequently called among the best of the s and a turning point for CG anime, and convincing skeptics that an action series could be well done outside of a 2D production. The writing was also positively received, with critics calling the characters and world likable and intriguing. It received several awards and nominations, namely for its visuals.

You won't find a ton of sports or ecchi anime on this list nothing against them but I think theres a pretty decent variety otherwise. My favorites are often a mix of Shonen, Thrillers and Slice-Of-Life with a few niche picks here and there. Is the concept executed well? Are there any plot holes or loose ends?

MC is annoying 1st season or so but actually has some solid development. When Natsume Takashi inherits a book that belonged to his late grandmother he realizes the book is filled with the names of spirits she defeated and bound to her will. Mushishi vibes, a mixed bag of sorts but accomplishes a lot and has a lot of charm. They feel useless, but are given the task to assemble a natural history by Kongo. Unique art style in a series like Kaiba for example can make up for lack of polished or low budget animation. Amazing narrative and art. We have the answers to all these questions and more! For the English release of the anime, series translator Deven Neel was instructed by the manga's creator, Haruko Ichikawa, to use gender-neutral pronouns for the characters, as Ichikawa wanted to portray them as genderless : the Japanese script uses a pronoun similar to "he", although noted by Neel as being more ambiguous, while the English translation uses singular "they".
