During our three months stay I was very lucky to know her as an artist and see her process. Her mixture of minimalist aesthetics both in her sculptures and video performances create a striking tension between systems of control and the parameters of the body. Jade Yumang: In Proof and Permutations , you push the limits of the body through various tasks. Your body goes through certain restraints with the objects you selected. They have a visual linearity, but purposely unsettling as it does not set the viewer up for a reason why you go through such actions. What is this push and pull with control, limitation, and uncertainty that is present in the work? Anna Garner: I tend to work and think in a very linear manner.

In Anna received the bronze prize in the Videoholica International Video Art Festival, and in participated in an artist residency at Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. She focuses on the body as an indicator of the interior performing as an instrument that reveals veracity through movement and presence. Through physical challenges and trials Anna pursues a collapse of self-control that reveals vulnerability, personal limitations, and clumsiness. Francesca Pirillo: When did you first become interested in art? Anna Garner: My interest in art began with photography. My father is an ardent photographer, and I grew up with his work in the house and going out on location with him for shoots. I remember having little patience while I sat and waited for him to adjust his camera and wait for the right shot. In spite of that, as I got older I became more and more interested in getting behind the lens, and in looking at things photographically.

What are the most anna garner influences that have moved you as an artist? The bags again are standins for points of connections, my cheek and head are again used as a point of force, meeting, and contention. They almost become like traps.

I am also aware that minimalist sculpture was very masculine, and was performative for the viewer; I see the work being in dialogue with this historical context. I also frequently made objects for my performances that would exist only temporarily in the video or sometimes would even be completely unseen, because they were off-screen. By turning the camera into portrait mode, it creates more visual space for the fall to take place, and for anticipation to build.
