This first-look, first-ride on the new Arc8 Essential is one of a number of reviews from the event.
The Swiss manufacturer relies on an unconventional rear suspension design, which replaces a rotating link with linear rails, and generates either or mm of travel. The first mountain bikes to carry the Arc8 name; the Evolve, Essential and Enduro Extra, were all open-mold designs. However, as of , Arc8 is on a mission to distinguish itself, with two all-new framesets that are specific to Arc8 and Arc8 alone. Again, designed by Jonas, but with an all-new suspension platform that has resulted in some seriously lightweight and drop dead gorgeous short-travel mountain bikes. The Evolve FS , released in May of this year, was the first of those two frames. Now, Arc8 are ready with a second option featuring that same frame layout with the shock slider, only this one is more trail-oriented. With the passing of time, a new category has emerged; Downcountry. In its most race-ready configuration, the Evolve FS pairs a mm fork with mm of rear wheel travel, while the less expensive builds get slightly more suspension travel; mm rear with a mm fork. On both, the rear wheel travel is delivered via a new suspension platform dependent on flexible seatstays with the shock driven via a slider mounted to the top tube. More recently than that, Jonas was a frame designer for Bicycle. Engineering , where he was head of development of open mold bicycle frames that were licensed out to be sold by numerous brands. In fact, the very first ARC8 bicycle, the Essential , is one of those aforementioned open mold frames designed by Jonas. The Evolve Hardtail and Extra Enduro frames followed shortly afterward.

The dropper offers a whopping mm of travel, and can be inserted all the way into the frame, ensuring plenty of freedom on the bike — awesome! Sorry to spoil the dadjoke, but you forgot the last part of the brandname. Where I ride flex stays prove to be harsh under braking compared to something with a rear pivot.
