The first stage for any career in playing a digital TCG like Artifact is to construct your deck. You can of course opt to just take a deck list from the tier sites, or indeed the best decks found in our Artifact best decks guide, and there's nothing wrong with that. However, there are players who will want to explore the art of constructing their own solutions to those decks, with the most rewarding aspect being finding a brutal combination. This deck will go over the basics of making your own deck. Your main deck can have a minimum of 40 cards with exactly five heroes, but there is no indicated upper limit, meaning your deck can be as fat or thin as you like. However, the downside of doing this is that your deck won't be streamlined to prioritise certain cards you may want more than others. Sometimes, especially when starting out, 40 cards isn't enough insurance. You can flesh out decks with some choice additions, as long as you don't go overboard, with the aim to streamline your deck list by removing cards that you find don't work when playing opponents.

One archetype that always shows up eventually is artifacts. Artifacts have been a powerful choice to build your deck around. These decks will typically use lots of colorless creatures, artifacts, and planeswalkers.

A constant villain in the Magic lore, Tezzeret is an artifact-themed planeswalker, so dedicated to his craft and his pursuit of power that he replaced much of his body with a magical metal called Etherium. Any mana rocks you have, like Sol Ring and Basalt Monolith, are reset every turn, giving you plenty of extra mana to play with during your opponent's turn to cast spells or activate the abilities of your other artifacts. For just five mana, Scourglass can be tapped and sacrificed to destroy all permanents in play, excluding artifacts and lands. There are plenty of ways to put Ashnod's Alter to good use, with plenty of combos capable because of its ability. Sample Hand New Hand Draw. If you're all in on an artifact deck, Unwinding Clock can keep your creatures on the defensive and give your other artifacts additional activations. Mystical Dispute. You can only activate this ability on your upkeep, making it a little narrow in terms of use but still a powerful deterrent for your opponents. You may opt-out at any time. Surge Engine. An obvious combo with Academy Ruins is with the artifact Mindslaver, which can be sacrificed to take control of an opponent's turn.
