The series is set in a fictional version of Malibu, California , where all of its inhabitants are dolls. The dolls behave like humans, though a number of the show's gags rely on their doll-like nature. The series centers on the life of Barbie , her friends, her siblings , her boyfriend Ken , and a number of pets. The series is stylized as a mock reality show featuring confessionals of the characters in between scenes. The show heavily relies on slapstick humor, and makes a lot of satirical and self-parody references to the Barbie doll line.

Much of the humor in the show derives from parodying and lampooning both the traditional reality TV format and the Barbie franchise itself - the dolls, for example, are perfectly aware that they are dolls and use oversized items, warn of the dangers of cutting their hair because it never grows back and need to wear sunscreen so that they don't melt. The series has gathered a following on various sites around the internet, most notably Tumblr , whose members are collectively referred to as Dreamhousers. The only doll whose age is definitively known is Chelsea , who turns six during Happy Birthday Chelsea. Skipper appears to be between 14 and 16 years old, while Stacie falls somewhere in between her two sisters. The topic of Barbie 's age was brought up multiple times during Gifts, Goofs, Galore , with no doll being able to provide an answer until Barbie told them at the end of the episode. An animated series that ties in with the popular Barbie toyline, Barbie: Life in the Dreamhouse is a web series produced by Mattel. The series follows a Slice of Life look into Barbie's, well, life in her Malibu dream house, with brief Reality Television -esque asides into Barbie and her friends' thoughts. Barbie attends parties, goes to the beach, dates Ken, hangs out with her sisters, and does all of the sort of things you would expect Barbie to do.

By all accounts, the new live-action Barbie film has a delightfully subversive edge to it, simultaneously poking fun at and paying homage to the iconic fashion doll and the toy line based around her. Barbie has starred in quite a few movies, but up until the last decade they were mainly direct-to-video releases aimed at a younger audience with titles like Barbie In A Mermaid Tale and Barbie: A Fashion Fairytale. These simple fantasy stories often cast Barbie and her friends in the roles of princesses or fairies who would interact with magical creatures in far-off lands. It was time for a radical change. Launching as a series of animated shorts between three and four minutes in length, the series broke away from the straightforward, kid-targeted approach of previous official Barbie content. It had more in common with the versions of Barbie and Ken from the Toy Story franchise than it did with any of the previous Barbie movies. Life In The Dreamhouse centers on Barbie voiced by Kate Higgins and her three younger sisters: tech-savvy Skipper voiced by Paula Rhodes , athletic Stacy also voiced by Rhodes , and little Chelsea voiced by Laura Gerow , whose cute and wholesome appearance hides a diabolical mind. They talk about their plastic skin and how their joints move. And although we never see any humans in the show, the characters sometimes interact with objects of human scale, like a giant credit card or a massive bottle of nail polish.
