But with the MS, I am looking mostly at how well it mimics a long and well established synthesis classic, albeit with a smattering of new and useful features. So when I approached Music Tribe to enquire about the possibility of getting a unit to review, I knew this was going to be a slightly different experience to my usual fare. But first… some history. For some while, I had been growing increasingly obsessed with synthesisers and artists that used them. A connection was made that would last until this day. Even now, looking at this image, I still feel the desire and excitement that the young teenage me felt back then. The kid in the picture was about my age, my build and even had a similar haircut. It was compact and had this beautifully simple layout and, most importantly, it was slung over his shoulder. Finally, here was the answer to my dreams. A small, seemingly affordable synth that would make me as cool as Vince Clarke and where I could take centre stage and not languish behind a tower of keyboards at the back, stage left. Not that I had a tower of keyboards, or a band on which I could take to the stage with. But you know what I mean. Well, as hard as I tried to convince my recently divorced parents to buy me one, it never came to be. Or the Mattel Synsonics that I was convinced would make me a drum god. And so, as I eventually entered the working world, synthesiser technology moved on, as did my tastes and by the time I was able to afford buying gear, sampling was affordable to the masses, as were many other types of electronic instruments, and the SH remained a dream.
Piling a bunch of notes on top of that is a different type of sound, like a sushi burrito or something.
Eh, you would sacrifice a lot in analog to add poly to an SH SH is like sushi for me, the balance of the filter, sequencer, and modulation are perfect. Piling a bunch of notes on top of that is a different type of sound, like a sushi burrito or something. Am I making any sense? The is what it is.

The inspired synthesizer tracks laid down in the s and '90s are etched in the annals of progressive rock, wave, EDM and synth-pop music forever, making them truly classic in every sense of the word.

With the continuing emergence of products inspired by legendary hardware from Behringer, we strap in and get our hands on its new MS, and place it side by side with an original SH When it comes to the history of synthesizers, the SH from Roland arrived at a time when synths were still relatively expensive. No, I have no idea why was the magic number either, as it makes no musical sense — but that was 80s tech for you! So with great anticipation, Behringer has not only made a product that resurrects the best qualities of the , but applied a few new elements to teach the old dog some new tricks. The original SH was available in grey, but due to the unpopularity of the at the time, was later released in both red and blue guises, in an attempt to revive sales. This gave rise to the urban myth that the red model was better for bass and the blue better for leads. It also ships with a power supply, but does not have the capacity to run on batteries.

The additions that Behringer have made take it beyond and all in a positive way. The filter tracks beautifully in pitch, lending itself to this form of usage again. Get the latest news, reviews and tutorials to your inbox. SH is like sushi for me, the balance of the filter, sequencer, and modulation are perfect. Unlike the original, the MS actually comes with the Modulation Grip, strap and strap lugs as standard. This is not a huge deal, except that the package also includes what Behringer describes as the Live Performance Kit. Skip to content. Both the sequencer and arpeggiator can derive their timing internally or externally, with the former being controlled by a dedicated tempo rotary that also doubles up as a swing control for the timing. Get it Mar 15 - It does what it says on the tin without much fuss, has a decent number of ins and outs although a clock out mirroring the clock in would have been handy and sounds good.
