Of course, there are plenty of action movies to choose from. Fury of the Gods and postapocalyptic movies like Zombieland — which all promise thrilling story lines, intense fight scenes and nonstop excitement. Looking for something a little more mind-altering? Tune into The Matrix. How about a flick that's just as comedic as it is action-packed? Leave it to David Harbour in Violent Night.
While we love all types of movies here at IGN, we're especially fond of action films. That's what we were weaned on, both the good and the bad. As fondly as we recall the mindless slaughterfests that powered the Saturday evenings and lazy Sunday afternoons of the '80s and '90s, the term "action movie" means more than just camp B-movie schlock. So along with the classic action fare, we've tried to invigorate this list with the best action anywhere you can find it. Our list was compiled by and voted on by IGN's biggest action fans, where we took into account a variety of factors, including quality of action, amount of thrills, and overall legacy of the film in question. The action scenes, vehicle demolition, and fight choreography were in top form here as Steve threw down against his past, both professionally and personally. Nobody made an unlikely commercial action hero out of Bob Odenkirk as theaters were re-opening, and afterwards, massive blockbusters like F9 , Black Widow , and Godzilla vs. Kong drew huge crowds that approached pre-pandemic levels. By this point the most in-demand director in Hollywood, James Cameron was given a blank check to realize his most extreme destructive visions, and the result is a film that rockets from one incendiary set piece to the next, barely pausing for breath as burned-out trucks, exploding cop cars and crashed helicopters pile in its wake. Critics Consensus: Bad Boys stars Will Smith and Martin Lawrence have enjoyable chemistry; unfortunately, director Michael Bay too often drowns it out with set pieces and explosions in place of an actual story. Action is one of the best genres to pick if you want to lose yourself in a movie. The point is that action films are thrilling and occasionally just what you need.

North by Northwest Directed By: Kathryn Bigelow. Critics Consensus: Hugh Jackman makes the most of his final outing as Wolverine with a gritty, nuanced performance in a violent but surprisingly thoughtful superhero action film that defies genre conventions. It makes fantastic use of the space, especially the train poles, as tools of movement and violence. You would remember if you have because director Timo Tjahjanto is a maniac, a madman who choreographs and shoots action scenes like no one else in the world right now. Critics Consensus: John Travolta and Nicolas Cage play cat-and-mouse and literally play each other against a beautifully stylized backdrop of typically elegant, over-the-top John Woo violence.
