It feels weird to write that, but it's a good day to start getting into the habit. I'm sure I'll accidentally get it wrong a half dozen times in the next week or so. This is the time of year where content creators take a look back at the best new cards from the previous year. I had planned to share a mix of old cards that I rediscovered and new cards from , but you don't need me to wax poetic about winning a game with Jedit Ojanen of Efrava and Yavimaya, Cradle of Growth. I could fill an entire column about my love of old cards like Tombstone Stairwell , but that isn't the challenge before me today. Today I'm going to share my top 10 list of new cards from Actually, I'm going to share TWO top 10 lists, but the first will be brief.

Some Commander cards definitely fit certain playstyles more, but these ones are pretty much guaranteed to be an excellent addition to any deck that can have them. Commander is widely regarded as not only the most popular MTG format , but also one of the most fun and more accessible ways to play the trading card game. While it does have larger decks than something like Standard or Modern would normally have, only needing one of any card when building your Commander deck generally makes the format more affordable, too. Each pick below is one of the best MTG Commander cards not just because of their power level, but also because of their ubiquitous nature. Sol Ring is the best card in Commander, whether you like it or not. This one-mana artifact taps to add two colourless mana to your mana pool. The fact that this can go in any deck and have such a huge impact is what makes this the best MTG card for Commander. There are some decks that might prefer something else on turn one but, for its sheer versatility, Sol Ring sits in the top spot. Rhystic Study is an annoying card to play against in Commander. This card can protect every permanent you control from just about everything bad that could happen to them, and it only costs two mana. This Green instant grants permanents you control hexproof and indestructible until the end of the turn. That means you can use it to avoid any targeted spell, any board wipes that destroy things instead of exiling them or just use it to avoid losing creatures in a big attack. Swiftfoot Boots is a two-mana equipment that often competes with Lightning Greaves, because they both cost two mana. However, while Lightning Greaves has the advantage of no equip cost, it grants shroud, which stops you from targeting the equipped creature - which can be annoying in Commander decks built around buff spells or just running a lot of equipment cards. While Swiftfoot Boots costs one mana to equip, it grants hexproof and haste, which means you can continue to cast spells that benefit your creature as you see fit.

Today's focus is Tempest , the twelfth Magic expansion set, which was released in October of , and is the first set in the aptly named Tempest block. Around the time that Tempest was released, Wizards of the Coast was experimenting with a ratings system for their sets based around the level of play experience the target audience ought to have. Tempest , along with all other expansion sets, were labeled expert-level sets. This is also the first set after Antiquities that featured Richard Garfield , the creator of Magic , in an active designer role. While this was technically an expert-level set, the set mechanics of shadow and buyback are actually pretty intuitive. Shadow is just a variant of flying or horsemanship, and buyback allows you to, well, buy things back after using them.

As an additional bonus, this is still a great first-turn card to play in decks with green thanks to cards like Azusa, Lost but Seeking and Exploration that allow you to play those three lands really quick. Commander boards can get very populated very quickly. No one enjoys having an almost-empty field when all the other players have ten or more creatures ready to run you over. Cards like Fumigate and Austere Command offer some circumstantial advantages but also have a higher mana cost and become more complex to play at the right time. Land Tax is an amazing card for early game but, as I mentioned, can draw you too many lands.

For two blue mana you can dismantle an infinite combo. This prevents any of your creatures from dying by any of that for just two mana. Churning out a column every week and doing my best to play a lot of those decks in paper or on Tabletop Simulator tends to expose me to a lot of new cards and new commanders. All three of these mana dorks have impacted my games, with Kami of Whispered Hopes being particularly strong in my Raggadragga, Goreguts Boss deck. Wheeling the table again and again and saving a ridiculous amount of mana on your spells is some of the most fun I've had in Magic. It already feels like he's been in the format forever, as he and last year's Ledger Shredder have become staples in mid and high-powered Blue decks and probably even see some cEDH play. There are some decks that might prefer something else on turn one but, for its sheer versatility, Sol Ring sits in the top spot. The downside, of course, is that it's one of the few cards that cares about the order of your graveyard. Of course, it shines brightest in the decks where the card disadvantage is mitigated by card draw or explosive combo potential, but you can technically play this in any deck. When players say that eight mana should probably win you the game, this is what they're talking about. This list is of cards that I've seen and played in my own games this year. Caveat emptor. I had Vampiric Tutor and Diabolic Tutor as runner ups for this position, but Demonic Tutor stands undefeated as the most flexible tutor to run in any deck that plays black.
