Walrein which starts off as a Spheal is also great, but it is found around the 7th Gym, so that might be too late for you, depending on how early you like having your team set up. Manectric Electrike is a solid Electric Type that evolves via level-up and has good enough Stats to carry you through the vast amounts of water Routes and trainers that you'll have to face. Don't get too focused on "the one best way" to play through these games: while they still require some thought, at this stage, they're still balanced to overall be on the forgiving side, so, ideally, you wanna have fun experimenting with what you seem to like best and adjust accordingly depending on your experience.
