Lund, M. The Marvel Universe was born out of the Cold War. Most of its initial characters were children of nuclear anxieties, often partnered with other sociocultural concerns. The influence of the Cold War has been ably traced in individual case studies Capitanio ; Genter ; Lund paras. In placing the Fantastic Four into a larger Cold War context and reading Black Panther through this lens, it shows how the latter character was born out of fears about what the then-recent decolonization of several African nations could mean for the United States and the Cold War.
