Side-fold soft-floors, rear-fold hard-floors and pull-out bed pop-tops are all now out of favour. The overwhelming majority are genuine enthusiasts who care about their products, use their kit, and often get so caught up telling you yarns about their latest offroad adventures they forget to sell you a camper. These are our people. So, what do you do when you fall firmly into the first category and need to make your gear stand out from the second? Despite having a relatively small presence, the guys and girls at Blue Tongue are a passionate lot. So after getting a few of their new models sorted, they figured it was high-time they turned drawing board and spanner roll to their successful Overland XF forward-fold camper.

Built with the versatility and off-road capability of a camper trailer but with all the inherent comforts of a caravan, the Hybrid Caravan XH15 represents complete freedom. Again and again and again …. It has an electrically-operated pop-top roof, fold-out extended bed, and everything you need to camp self-sufficiently and fully-contained for as long as you want. It starts with an all-weather kitchen that can be used anywhere anytime. Set into the passenger side wall of the hybrid caravan, the kitchen is always ready. If you need to make a quick stop while barrelling west along the black-top, you can simply lift the door and make a coffee. The XH15 kitchen features a tall deep pantry, a pair of generous overhead cupboards, and inbuilt Smev stainless steel three-burner stove and fold-out countertop. Plus, there are two more large drawers under the kitchen that slide on stainless runners and are accessible even when the kitchen is closed. The sink is plumbed with hot and cold water, and the cooking area has LED lighting designed to eliminate any shadows. It is almost a metre long and a half-metre wide and easily fits the latest litre Dometic CFX dual-zone fridge or Mycoolman 96L. The XH15 has everything you need, and more than enough storage, to eat well wherever you end up camping.

Like it or not, hardfloor and forward-fold campers are normally substantially more complex than their softfloor counterparts.

Imagine buying one pair of pants to last your lifetime — throughout the seasons, and probably with a few food-related expansions over the years, too. As we saw the XH15 there is a need for a fair bit of fine tuning: dust sealing, bed lights, a relocated Anderson plug for the fridge, fridge covering, and so on. Adjacent to the ensuite, directly opposite the entry, is a dinette suitable for three people in comfort or four at a squeeze, which can be converted to an x mm bed, and above which was a fold-down single bunk bed of the same size.
