Mostly hinting at the rampant corruption that infects all levels of government, and includes the police organizations as well. The killer calmly walked through the diners, fired his gun at Victor Palmgran who was giving a little speech. There were about ten people who either work for him or were related to one of the guests seated at the table. The shooter then exited through one of the large windows. Pressure immediately comes down from high up in the government, is funneled onto Beck, and off he goes. The case seems impossible. No one can describe the shooter. Books like Roseanna, The Laughing Policeman and The Abominable Man featured tightly structured plots packed with realistic details, charting the unglamorous slog and grind of police work. The duo penned the series decades before the likes of Henning Mankell and Stieg Larsson made the genre a worldwide hit. His own Inspector Kurt Wallander series would owe much to Beck three decades later. Both committed Marxists, they went beyond crime fiction, breaking new ground by carrying out a forensic examination of the failings of Swedish society. The themes they tackled included paedophilia, serial killers, the sex industry and suicide. She worked as a translator and art director, and as a journalist for Swedish magazines and newspapers. The two quickly became a couple and had two sons before they decided to launch the Martin Beck series.
