Before Boris, I had borne my solitude stoically enough, without realizing quite how alone I was. Well, kid, guess what? I did know. Because if possible to paint fakes that look like that? Las Vegas would be the most beautiful city in the history of earth! Anyway—so funny! Here I am, so proudly teaching you to steal apples and candy from the magazine, while you have stolen world masterpiece of art. Because this is closed circle, you understand? Horst is right on the money about that. No one is going to buy this painting. Impossible to sell. But—black market, barter currency? Can be traded back and forth forever! Valuable, portable.

Theo Oakes Fegley was there with his mother when a terrorist attack happened, killing her and others, and leaving rubble. Theo awoke and took the painting, something that had survived for centuries, handed down over generations, but now looks like it could get lost in the grief spiral that Theo is about to enter over the next two decades of his life. Before taking the painting, Theo is handed a ring by a dying man, and told to take it back to his partner Hobie Jeffrey Wright. With his mother dead and his father MIA, young Theo becomes a part of two worlds—that of an upper-class family that takes him in, led by a matriarch played by Nicole Kidman , and the antiques shop run by Hobie. Over nearly pages, told in first-person, Tartt has the freedom to get readers into the development of Theodore Decker in ways that they simply never figured out how to replicate on film. Overall, most of the performances are lacking—Kidman is wasted to an upsetting degree—with the possible exception of Wright, one of the few cast members who seems to be playing character more than plot. There's nothing below the surface of this soulless movie. Ansel Elgort as Theodore Decker.

Boris Volodymyrovych Pavlikovsky is a major character in The Goldfinch. He is portrayed by Finn Wolfhard and Aneurin Barnard in the film adaptation. Boris was born in Ukraine to a Ukrainian father and a Polish mother. Both of his parents were alcoholics. His mother died when he was young, falling out of a window while intoxicated. His father built mines for a living and had violent tendencies due to his alcoholism, severely psychically abusing Boris and once killing a man while living in New Guinea. Because of his father's occupation, the Pavlikovskys moved often. Boris ran away from his father many times, once even attempting to kill his father by tricking him into going outside into the Ukrainian winter while he was intoxicated and locking him out, hoping he would freeze.
