The Balmain Tigers were the last team the Broncos had failed to beat, until their victory in Round 18 of the season. The Super League war had arrived. In round 11 Brisbane were at the bottom of the ladder before racking up their biggest ever win, defeating an under-strength Newcastle Knights 71—6. The Broncos did not start their season well, with a big 36—4 defeat by the previous year's runners-up, the North Queensland Cowboys in the first round.
