While he certainly had some irritating traits such as being arrogant and preppy, he became a fan-favorite character thanks to his lovable nature and humor. He has the same amount of arrogance, preppiness, and insecurity but without any of the charm or humor that Ribeiro's iteration had. But the reason Carlton is so antagonistic towards Will is that he views him as a threat to his status and reputation. Carlton actively seeks to make Will's life miserable with a notable example being when he pushes his cousin in the pool in Bel-Air 's very first episode. Additionally, it is later revealed that Carlton becomes addicted to Xanax, constantly snorting the drug due to being unable to confront his insecurities. This meaner version of Carlton was such a radical change from Fresh Prince that fans were quick to hate the character, which was something that both the creators and Sholotan expected. Sholotan explains that " I think apathy is the enemy of excellence Fortunately, Carlton becomes a much more redeemable and likable character by Bel-Air season 2 as both he and Will grow closer after Carlton overcomes his Xanax addiction and the two patch up their differences. Whether it's Carlton driving himself and Will together to school or them cracking jokes with each other, the show highlights that the once-enemies have now formed a brotherly bond that is more reminiscent of their Fresh Prince counterparts.
