We have developed an online database describing the known cell lines from Coleoptera, Diptera, Hemiptera, Hymenoptera, and Lepidoptera that were developed from agricultural pests. Cell line information has been primarily obtained from previous compilations of insect cell lines. Here, we report on a new database of insect cell lines, which covers cell lines from 86 species. We provide the designation, tissue and species of origin, cell line developer, unique characteristics, its use in various applications, publications, and patents, and, when known, insect virus susceptibility. Despite an increased awareness of the problematic of cell line cross-contamination and misidentification, it remains nowadays a major source of erroneous experimental results in biomedical research. To prevent it, researchers are expected to frequently test the authenticity of the cell lines they are working on. STR profiling was selected as the international reference method to perform cell line authentication.

While the experimental protocols and manipulations for generating a STR profile are well described, the available tools and workflows to analyze such data are lacking. The Cellosaurus knowledge resource aimed to improve the situation by compiling all the publicly available STR profiles from the literature and other databases. As a result, it grew to become the largest database in terms of human STR profiles, with 6, distinct cell lines having an associated STR profile release July 31, It aims to help researchers in the process of cell line authentication by providing numerous functionalities. Keywords: STR profiling; authentication; cell culture; cell lines; contamination; misidentification. Abstract Despite an increased awareness of the problematic of cell line cross-contamination and misidentification, it remains nowadays a major source of erroneous experimental results in biomedical research. Cellosaurus is an online knowledge base on cell lines , which attempts to document all cell lines used in biomedical research. Its scope includes immortalised cell lines , naturally immortal cell lines example: embryonic stem cells and finite life cell lines when those are distributed and used widely. The Cellosaurus provides a wealth of manually curated information; for each cell line it lists a recommended name, synonyms and the species of origin. Other types of information include standardised disease terminology for cancer or genetic disorder cell lines , the transformant used to immortalise a cell line, transfected or knocked-out genes, microsatellite instability , doubling time , gender and age of donor patient or animal , important sequence variations, web links, publication references and cross-references to close to different databases, ontologies, cell collections and other relevant resources. Since many cell lines used in research have been misidentified or contaminated , the Cellosaurus keeps track of problematic cell lines, including all those listed in the International Cell Line Authentication Committee ICLAC [8] tables. For human as well as some dog cell lines, it provides short tandem repeat STR profile information. Since July , cell lines in the Cellosaurus are represented as items in Wikidata.

Federal government websites often end in. The site is secure. The Cellosaurus is a knowledge resource on cell lines. It aims to describe all cell lines used in biomedical research. Its scope encompasses both vertebrates and invertebrates. For each cell line, it provides a wealth of information, cross-references, and literature citations. Cell lines are ubiquitous tools for experimental biomedical research, both in academic and industrial settings. The mouse L cells were the first immortalized cell line to be established in , 1 but for almost everyone, the dawn of the era of cell lines is associated with the establishment in of the HeLa cell line from the cervical tumor of Henrietta Lacks by George Otto Gey.
