The unbroken lineage that ties todays practitioners of Celtic and Nordic tattooing to their ancestors can be traced in artifacts, historical records, and myth.

Over and under, the knots flow, dragging your eyes on the journey they follow. The rule to this simple and mesmerising system appeals to something within us all and it is only natural to want to follow it. To me, knotwork is one of the few places that we can still see magic in its raw form, as clear to us now as it would have seemed to our ancestors through the ages. I do my best to honour the traditions they created so long ago; not to just imitate them, but to live them, use them and build upon them through my artwork on skin and other mediums. So many of the cultures of the past have been lost to us in Northern Europe and yet the art of our ancestors still speaks to us.

Piercing blue eyes stare out from a face spattered with blood. Thick blue lines crawl up his neck and across the side of his shaved head. The Norsemen or vikingar of Scandinavia have long fascinated — and terrified — those that came into contact with them. But were the Vikings really tattooed? There is one historical account that suggests they were. An Arab traveler, Ahmad Ibn Fadlan, first met the Norse warriors as he traveled across Russia on a diplomatic mission. He encountered them sailing their longships down the Volga river, looking to trade with the Arab world. Similar knotwork designs are also featured in Celtic tattoos. Since the Norwegian Vikings established significant settlements and then Kingdoms in Scotland, Ireland and the Isle of Man, it makes sense that their art should feature similar patterns. These days, Norse and Celtic tattoos are almost interchangeable.

Regular folk, the Vikings believed, moved on to a dark afterlife, while those who perished valiantly in combat went to Valhalla. Many Scandinavian elements may be seen in the Celtic realm. There were invasions documented in Wales, as well as traces of tiny colonies. Celtic Vikings have many symbols associated with them as well. These include Celtic symbols like the snake and wolf. They have great symbolism associated with them, and many of them have connections with the idea of heaven and life. They are all great ideas for getting a Celtic tattoo design, and many designs based on Norse mythology are available as Celtic tattoos. This is a very intricate patterned tattoo that has many Celtic symbols strewn about the design.
