Lead singer Gary Lightbody reportedly wrote the song when he became sober after a binge of white wine , in the garden of song producer Jacknife Lee 's cottage in Kent. There's no knife-in-the-back twist. When I read these lyrics back, I was like, 'Oh, that's weird. You'll never catch it and you just wouldn't know what to do with it if you did. The song was also performed as the last live performance on long-running music programme Top of the Pops.

Snow Patrol are a rock band formed in in Dundee, Scotland. After briefly using the name Polarbear, releasing the EP Starfighter Pilot and losing Morrison as a member, the band became Snow Patrol in and added Jonny Quinn to the lineup as drummer. The band then signed to the major record label Polydor Records in , with Connolly joining as lead guitarist shortly thereafter. Their major-label debut album, Final Straw , was released the following year. In , McClelland left the band and was replaced by Paul Wilson. Their next studio album, Eyes Open , and its hit single " Chasing Cars "—reported in to be the most-played song of the 21st century on UK radio [7] —propelled the band to greater international fame.
