Cheech and Chong live in a decrepit old house and drive their neighbour crazy with their loud music, weed smoking and general anarchy and slacker view on life.

Cheech gets fired from his job for taking one of the studio vans home without permission and they go to see Donna, a welfare officer and Cheech's off and on girlfriend. Cheech successfully seduces Donna, under her objections, and gets her in trouble and possibly fired with her boss. The doped-up duo are expelled from the building and, in an attempt to find alternative means of income, start writing songs like, "Mexican Americans" and "Beaners. Cheech answers the phone call from Donna, sets up a date, and goes to tell Chong to get lost so he can clean the house and get ready for Donna. The phone rings again with Cheech thinking it's Donna and turns out to be Red, Cheech's "kinda" cousin, with money problems and a plea for help. Cheech asks Chong to pick up his cousin and hang out with him as Cheech informs him they have similar interests like "go to clubs," "get plenty of chicks," and "likes to get high. The receptionist is holding his luggage, consisting of a boom-box, a suitcase, and a pound canvas bag full of high-grade marijuana hostage, and Red can't afford the bill.

The duo met in Vancouver, British Columbia , in Chong was a Canadian citizen, and Cheech had moved there from southern California to avoid the draft at the height of the Vietnam War. City Works performed as part of a "hippie burlesque" at Shanghai Junk, a strip club owned by Chong's family. Marin briefly joined City Works as a replacement for the original straight man. According to Chong's book "The Unauthorized Autobiography," the two came out one night to warm up the crowd for a new musical group of Chong's, but never relinquished the stage due to the audience's strong laughter. As the improv group had not been a financial success at the strip club -- they drew a large but low-spending crowd -- the two decided to form a comedy duo and play different venues. Successful as a duo, they eventually moved to Los Angeles. The pair performed stand-up shows, released many successful comedy record albums, and starred in a series of low-budget films. Perhaps their most famous line is "Dave's not here", from their self-titled debut album. Their early success culminated with the release of their first feature-length movie, Up in Smoke , in Tommy Chong directed four of their films while co-writing and starring in all seven with Cheech Marin.

An unemployed pot-smoking slacker and amateur drummer, Anthony Stoner ditches his strict parents and hits the road, eventually meeting kindred spirit Pedro de Pacas. While the drug-ingesting duo is soon arrested for possession of marijuana, Anthony and Pedro get released on a technicality, allowing them to continue their many misadventures and ultimately compete in a rock band contest, where they perform the raucous tune "Earache My Eye. Perennially stoned Cheech and Chong tear through the city of Los Angeles, causing trouble wherever they go. After Cheech loses his job, the two pot enthusiasts head to the welfare offices where Cheech's girlfriend, Donna, works. Instead of collecting unemployment, they find themselves thrown back on the streets, searching for a way to earn new income. But when Cheech's cousin, "Red" Mendoza, arrives, things get even crazier.
