CIF membership includes both public and private high schools. Unlike most other state organizations, it does not have single, statewide championships for all sports; instead, for some sports, the CIF's 10 Sections each have their own championships. Six schools near the state border are members of adjacent state's associations. As early as , schools around the San Francisco Bay Area began competing against each other in football organized by the Amateur Academic Athletic Association. Other boys sports were added starting in , organized by the Academic Athletic League.

The Coachella Valley could have as many as eight high school football teams in the Southern Section playoffs this year, but it remains unclear which teams will play in which division. That will all be determined this Saturday, following the final game of the regular season for hundreds of schools in the CIF-SS. Previously, the CIF-SS would take the last two years of a team's schedule and record and come up with divisions prior to the start of the season. That was creating unequal divisions, though, because teams that were good years previously were not guaranteed to be as good a third year, with key players graduating, coaches leaving and teams often rebuilding with a young squad. The CIF-SS implemented this new system to be as accurate as possible by only judging and rankings teams on the current year.
