Finding something the whole family can watch during the holidays is a perennial challenge. Now, a few generations later, they live together in a magical house and each member develops their own talent, like the ability to control the weather, shapeshift into other people, and talk to animals. Each bedroom is magically tailored to the relative and their magical gift. All except for one, Mirabel Stephanie Beatriz. The conflict is minimal at best, which allows for Mirabel to spend more time learning about what she can do despite her lack of powers, but it also leaves the movie feeling a bit meandering. To make up for lost action, the movie shines in its animation and design, really making use of the house with doors to new worlds and musical sequences that allow for a little more abstract artistic freedom. Those numbers sounded flimsy and forgettable.

Members of the Madrigal family and their gifts are built on familiar archetypes. Her oldest sister Isabela is the golden child, so flowers bloom with every step she takes. And their nurturing mother Julieta cooks food that can heal actual ailments. And from their earliest conversations, the filmmakers knew they shared a desire to tell a story featuring an extended family. June 18, Colombia also has a rich tradition of magical realism — where magic is just a facet of everyday reality — and it offered the filmmakers a way to heighten the familiar family dynamics they wished to explore through a magic not yet seen in Disney films. It was just really exciting to play in that realm. We wanted to highlight certain aspects of the country that we thought were important to be portrayed in the film. This meant facilitating conversations with architects, who could speak to traditional materials used in Colombian architecture; chefs, to celebrate the food; and artisan groups, who could speak to the cultural significance of specific traditional crafts. And that was something that we were really lucky to have such great partners help us with.

Some complaints I had with the story It just could be better. Stephanie Beatriz did a great job I thought, as did the whole cast. I had fun with the numbers, but they became the center stage of the film where everything was about those numbers. A few things were predictable I foresee many more movies akin to this in the future. Encanto is a whirl for children. I could tell about 30 minutes in that it was going to come down to the family appreciating what they have in each other without the magical gifts. The animation is really gorgeous, Probably the best computer animation that Disney has produced to date. Doesn't have a patch on Luca or Coco from recent years. And then, the house becomes an actual character, an anthropomorphized obstacle that has its own means of adding to the story as it protects and pulls the family into its moving embrace. As for costumes, I particularly love the costumes that show their tradition, yet at the same time, are contemporary outfits. It's a beautiful representation of the work family building is, and tries to bring the other important elements of the culture into every scene they can.

Stephanie Beatriz as Mirabel Madrigal voice. The voice cast do good work. In a comical manner, the house bobs and weaves its own dance, having a lot of fun character though it never speaks a word to the characters it helps on a daily basis. It's a bit of a slow starter, which contributes to my fairly mid rating. Mirabel is a winning lead character and loved how all the characters had strong individual personalities. And that would have been a fine ending but everyone gets their powers back in the end which earlier in the film it was revealed that nearly every family member wasn't happy with their power and either saw it as a burden or too much pressure. The music is not particularly good, and most annoyingly, some major plot points are contained only in the damn songs. The story's predictability was in part due to the budget going to these songs alongside the power struggles mentioned above, was because of all the focus on the soundtrack The movie has a great respect for the character motifs, and those elements of the story are strong, but I can't lie that it still did not have all the elements that Tangled, Zootopia, and Wreck it Ralph have made famous in their lineage.
