What's D2L? D2L Desire2Learn — also known as D2l marquette — is a web-based tool to shopq online education. Each course at Marquette has its own D2L course site. Students use D2L for interactive communication, secure submission of assignments to instructors, and online quizzes.

IT Services creates a D2L course site for every class section. Instructors may wish to combine multiple D2L course sites into one. A merged course site — known as a D2L Course Combine — can simplify course management. Or a combined course site helps facilitate student discussion across class sections. When a D2L Course Combine occurs, all instructors and students enrolled in the multiple course sites move to one parent course site within D2L. Instructors then have one D2L course site to manage instead of several. This also means that all students in the combined course get the same gradebook and grade setup.

While many professors will return papers and assignments with written grades and comments, it is easy to lose track of feedback. D2L is an organized portal for both students and professors to keep track of grades, without students being kept in the dark until midterm and final scores are posted on CheckMarq. Students can easily open files, read the information on their computer screens or even print the papers if they choose to. But instead of printing out countless pages of handouts for every student of each class, a professor can simply direct students toward D2L to access the information. Students are able to upload a file, at which time his or her professor can easily access it. The professor can then re-post the document with edits and grades. But Ekachai also provides her students with hard copies of handouts and expects them to turn in hard copies of assignments. Even if professors are not willing to stray from hard copies of handouts or from receiving hard copies of assignments from students, D2L is still a good backup. If students cannot locate a class handout, they can easily re-print, or if they are unaware of what their next assignment is, they can check the syllabus posted on D2L. Marquette professors invariably have different teaching methods. Some place more emphasis on discussions and participation, others rely on handouts or essays, and some require their students to take weekly online quizzes. In any case, D2L meets the needs of all Marquette instructors. At its full potential, D2L is beneficial not only for professors, but also for students. Teachers should post every grade on D2L, thereby constantly showing students their most updated overall score.

The university requires that midterm grades be assigned to students in most undergraduate courses and that these grades be based on appropriate written evidence of achievement. Midterm grades are assigned mid-way through the fall and spring term, as per the deadline in the University Academic Calendar.
