Davis lake fire update

According to BC Wildfire Service, 55 personnel and one helicopter are responding to the fire. The Fraser Valley Davis lake fire update District released an Emergency Advisory on Friday July 7 for Electoral Area F asking people to avoid the area completely to allow for wildfire-fighting activities to be prioritized.

The Fraser Valley Regional District is asking residents and visitors to avoid the Davis Lake area due to a growing, out-of-control wildfire burning on a mountainside east of Mission, B. The Davis Lake wildfire, now a highly-visible wildfire of note, is burning in a remote area on the forested slope less than a kilometre north of Davis Lake Provincial Park, 18 kilometres north of Abbotsford. The BC Wildfire Service is actively engaged in wildfire containment activities in the area and we ask the public to avoid the area. Since being discovered Wednesday evening, the blaze has sent a thick plume of smoke into the air, which is visible from Abbotsford, Mission and neighbouring communities including Chilliwack. High winds have fuelled growth of the blaze from 20 hectares Friday afternoon to more than 38 hectares as of Friday evening, according to B. Wildfire Service information officer Donna MacPherson.

A planned burn of 10 hectares on the northern flank of the fire was completed on Friday July 14 to bring the blaze to established containment lines. There are currently 55 Coastal Fire Centre personnel, two helicopters and heavy equipment on the scene. Hand guards are wide paths ahead of a wildfire where combustible materials such as grass, twigs, branches, logs and trees are removed. Lost Creek Forest Service Roads is closed in relation to the fire and there are no current evacuation orders for the incident. On Saturday July 8 , crews were able to do some small area burning on the southwest flank of the fire. The fire centre says planned ignitions provide a way for firefighters to work from easily accessible and established control lines, which are more suitable for efficient and effective suppression efforts.

Preto says the rain and cooler conditions on Monday should help to reduce fire behaviour, but not enough to extinguish it. We would need to see some significant rainfall for it to have any meaningful impact on the fire situation.
