The writer-director of Ex Machina and Annihilation heads to the small screen for an imaginative series that suffers from a listless lead performance. The world created on the page by novelist Jeff VanderMeer and then brought, frighteningly, to life was so endlessly compelling I craved more time within it, a two-hour film that could have easily stretched to a seven-hour miniseries. For his follow-up, Garland has smartly found a way to expand, heading to TV with Devs, an ambitious new series that allows him the chance to truly revel in a universe of his own creation, for better or worse.
