Alongside hunger and temperature, it is one of the key things players have to juggle constantly by crafting items and gathering resources. It is a resource that you have to constantly keep refilling using different items, otherwise, you will not survive. While certain characters function differently in regards to sanity, for most of them being low on sanity makes playing the game much harder. It decreases the more time you spend in the dark, what items you pick up or craft, and when fighting enemies. If your sanity is too low, you will start to see shadow creatures, which are sort of the main antagonist of the game. The lower your sanity, the more aggressive they become. So, while players are trying to survive the harsh terrain and numerous creatures like Spiders, angry Bees and Frogs, players will have the added danger of these shadows coming after them. Because Sanity is so important with this game , there are a lot of causes for Sanity dropping. Being alone, exploring the wilderness and avoiding any causes of death would take its toll on anyone, just the same for the characters in this game. Encountering monsters is a big portion of that, especially fighting them, as well as sitting in darkness with no real light source. Rain is no help, even eating bad or raw foods, or meat from Monsters.

The more insane you are, the more desaturated and bleak the world gets, and I always thought that was really neat.
