Action anime has an unfortunate reputation of being dominated by male leads and featuring disappointingly few well-written female characters. Yet, incredible female protagonists are not as rare in action anime as many fans presume. Battle-oriented genres, like shonen and seinen, are commonly aimed at male demographics, which creates an unfortunate shortage of action-packed series led by women. However, the heroines that do get to shine on the frontlines of explosive battle series are often incredible, not only in physical prowess but also in strength of character. Action plots that focus on female leads often excel at developing multifaceted heroines whose complex characterization could rival that of shojo and romance series.
