I like to look at items from the appearance pane or adventure guide loot tables without always being at the transmog vendor since they may be items I have yet to obtain. Maybe right clicking to disable or a toggle switch to select and deselect items from the appearance list would be a good place to do this? The hidden slots will replace the previously empty slots. Back then a cool looking guys was a cool guy in game sense too. I think they're saying that people who looked cool also had good gear - if you saw someone standing around in full tier 2 set, that was probably BiS at the time. Now you can see someone in a really cool looking, matching set of armor, but they might not even be max level. Which is really funny, considering for most of classic paladins wore a teal dress and not their actual set. Fortunately transmog was introduced several expansion later.
