A guitar is an heirloom — a treasure and a testament to a musician; meant to be just as beautiful as the music played on it. So for a guitar that both sounds and looks equally radiant, today our featured TopShelf Luthier is Chris Alvarado and the unrelenting beauty of his Driftwood Guitars. Unlike many other born-and-raised musicians, Alvarado led a long and musicless life before returning to his first love after a chance encounter with another recruit unit while stationed at an Air Force base in Alaska. From there, Alvarado began experimenting, learning, and creating a successful and exceptional line of guitars. This collaboration was a challenging one but would become a cornerstone for how Alvarado does business today. Everything from the soundboard wood to the rib rest bevel is carefully considered and then handmade and assembled to give clients a guitar that is completely curated to each of their own distinctive personalities and needs.

Driven by a passion to create one of a kind works of art, Chris Alvarado pours his heart and soul into every instrument he makes. Since , he has been handcrafting guitars that pay tribute to the craftsmen of the past, while keeping an eye towards the future of building innovations. Chris makes it his goal to get to know every customer that commissions a piece, in order to build a truly custom instrument; one that not only looks like the guitar they have been dreaming of, but one that feels and sounds even far greater than those dreams. He helps to guide every client through the build process and encourages feedback while including the customer every step of the way. In January of , Chris decided to grow his company and made his first hire, Matt Miller. Matt grew up in the Florida Panhandle playing music for most of his life before completing a mechanical engineering degree from UCF in It was this passion for art and science and his long-standing, brutally sarcastic friendship with Chris that made him a perfect fit for Driftwood Guitars. Together, Chris and Matt have not only enjoyed working together on some revolutionary guitar designs and builds, they have also grown their Youtube channel to over 45k subscribers and collaborated with Stewmac on a three-part video series.
