And I definitely wouldn't have found myself slogging through it weeks later, my brain tangled in knots over the complicated-enough-to-cry plots within plots, within plots and intricate world-building. Dune has more than earned its place in the science fiction pantheon; it's a masterpiece, don't get me wrong. But for the first 50 to pages, you'd be forgiven for wanting to dig Frank Herbert out of his grave and beg him to explain WTF is going on. The easiest way to put it is that Herbert is not here to help you read his book. He's created this elaborate universe, and if you want to come along for the ride, fine, but there are no seatbelts, no safety bars, and we're not stopping for bathroom breaks. In other words, this book feels impenetrable for the first hundred pages or so, and cracking it open is like being thrown into the middle of the ocean and told to swim. He carelessly throws around terminology melange, mentats, Bene Gesserit and historical events "Butlerian Jihad" stumped me for a long time as though you already know what they mean, and good thing, because we're already moving on to the next scene, please keep up! The world-building in Dune is superb and wonderfully three-dimensional, to be clear. And I get a lot of people telling me I've got it wrong on this But instead of fulfilling the kind of destiny that we get with Paul, we see him grow up under the auspices of his Uncle the Baron, becoming as cruel and devious as he was deadly. A Praga Branca. I'm pleased to write that I have finally completed the great Dune trilogy. Just wow. With Dune being destroyed, Chapterhouse must become a new home to sandworms. In Children of Dune , Paul Atreides' children, a pair of 9 years old twin, Leto II and Ghanima, were born possessing all the memories of their ancestors. When they appear, it's great, but it's not that much. I found the story to be beautifully written and the action kept the pace throughout. Brilliant in his own right, devious and able to corrupt anyone with just the right sorts of pressure, including a certain absolutely trustworthy doctor we might mention.

Written by Joshua Ehiosun. The story of Paul Atreides was an excellent story that Frank Herbert carved up beautifully.

In conclusion, Dune Messiah is a VERY different type of book than its predecessor Dune, and it does have its vices, but the good more than outweighs the bad by far. Jump to ratings and reviews. Here, plans are set in motion to create another melange "factory" on another planet. Never really been a fan of sci-fi before but so happy that my husband brough me the first three books. And yes, teenage Nick, there is a hell of a lot of talking. Much of this is enabled by the spice melange, which is found only on Arrakis, a desert planet with giant sand-worms as its most notable native life-form. In the book, he's just a fat dude! Religious fanatics are destined to wage a brutal war that the Messiah is unable to stop. No wonder this is widely regarded as not just a Science Fiction masterpiece, but a literary achievement as well. Usually the future is one thing and fate or destiny allow multiple paths but only one outcome.
