E36 overheating

My E36 M3 will slowly overheat sometimes at idle. When I rev the engine a bit, it will cause it to go back down. I used to have a small leak, which is what I thought was causing it but I fixed the leak, and its continuing. Yesterday, it started to creep up at idle, even with plenty of coolant in it.

If you are having trouble bleeding the system by normal means, you can e36 overheating pulling a vacuum on the system using a port attached to where the radiator cap fits. All rights reserved.

All of a sudden out of the blue, you glance down and notice that your coolant temperature needle is to the right of the 12 o'clock position, or horror of horrors the red light is on!

They can last for hundreds of thousands of miles with little more than routine maintenance if a few key steps are followed. By a wide margin, the biggest weakness of the E36 BMW in terms of reliability is the cooling system. When most people acquire a new-to-them E36, they will inspect the cooling system visually, and if there are no leaks and the engine is not overheating, they assume that everything is fine and will continue driving the car as-is. The reason why this is a risky scenario is because the failure-prone cooling system components will look and function perfectly until they fail suddenly and without warning , thus leading to an overheating incident.

Do not use tap water or spring water, as these have impurities that will contaminate your system. You may have boiled the fluid in a spot or two when it got hot and now you have air in the system. Please consider creating a new thread. Sounds like a broken heater valve, or a massive air bubble in the system. M series. Good luck! Bet it must be a right bummer changing HG on one of these :S. Check your fan clutch. I had no idea that you should make this regular maint. Sort by Oldest first Oldest first Newest first Most reactions. If only overheating at idle, it is the fan clutch. Do a new thermostat when you do it and bleed properly. E36 M3 Overheating issues.. Any ideas on what to check? I'm going to vote for a failing waterpump as well. Well I got my new parts today, Thermostat, housing, water pump, new bleed screw and coolant. I could slow it down but not fully stop it, so I spose it's kinda half n half I just hope it's all good for the time being as long as it's not headgasket failure I don't care.
