Shin was found to have hijacked Smith's identity and for months sent emails to his partner's family to make it seem he was traveling in Africa to throw them off the scent. Chris Smith, 32, of Laguna Beach, California, in appeared to be sending emails to his parents telling them he was traveling in Africa, when in fact he had been murdered. Now, in a Dateline segment, which aired on Friday night, Shin says he's covering for an accomplice who got rid of the body somewhere, and he won't give up who that person is. Dateline's Keith Morrison asks Shin about getting rid of Smith's body, and that if he wasn't the person who discarded his partner's remains, 'then who did'? It was unclear whether the bombshell revelation will have any bearing on Shin's case. Authorities said that Smith's family had not suspected anything unusual when they started receiving emails telling them he decided to go on an adventure holiday to Africa. Smith, of Laguna Beach, California, was sending emails to his parents telling them how much fun he was having and of all the places he had visited. But it was later revealed that Smith was actually dead and had been murdered by Shin. Then age 33, Shin was accused of beating Smith to death in their San Juan Capistrano office to gain control over his partner's shares in their company, and later disposing of the body. In jailhouse interview, Ed Shin says he doesn't know where Chris Smith's body is. Posing as Smith, Shin told the year-old's loved ones he had sold his share of the ad company the two founded and was living out his dream traveling the world on a chartered yacht with a Playboy Playmate and a stack of gold coins. Police say that for about year Shin managed to dupe almost everyone. People believed Shin because Smith was a surfer with wanderlust stitched into his DNA, and he had been investing in gold coins. Shin, now 42, later confessed to accidentally killing Smith, but he has denied he intentionally murdered him in the office of the company the two men founded. Shin and Smith met in Southern California while both were working in companies specializing in lead generation, a form of media advertising that collects customer leads using numbers, and then sells those leads to other companies.

Shin, who had embezzled money from a former employer, said he accused Smith of being complicit in the theft and could furnish proof. Shin said his infuriated partner grabbed him by the throat, lunged at him repeatedly and threw punches. Shin said he watched Smith lie on the carpet in a fetal position, blood pooling under his head, but did not call because he was scared, in shock and convinced that no one would believe him. He said he went to a hardware store to buy cleaning supplies and hired carpet cleaners out of the PennySaver. He rented fans and repainted the office walls but had trouble masking all the blood spots. Shin also acknowledged that he had faked his own kidnapping years earlier and blamed the misbegotten scheme — which targeted his father for ransom money — on the influence of pain medication. Deputy Dist. Murphy said Shin had buried the body in the desert and fabricated the story about the Eastern European man. During cross-examination, Murphy asked Shin why, during an interview with a detective, he had omitted the detail about Smith grabbing him by the throat.
