Trail gets narrow near the top. Trail markers are not near the opening at the top of the mountain. Fully covered in snow, doable with crampons and caution. Poles and winter outfits recommended.

Saw a roadrunner and lots of mountain blue birds at the peak.

Very busy trail and the parking lot fills up pretty quick, however, you can park on the road near the parking lot on one side but it is in direct sunlight compared to the shady parking lot at the trail head. The majority of the trail to Elk Mountain is in the woods and out of the sun and the trail is all incline and actually kind of steep in some spots. This is where the snow and ice on the trail started… micro spikes are mandatory at this point as it was very slippery.
