While this is a great resource as many have said, god were the forums such a fucking groupthinking, insular scene. The same goes for being so particular about what is metal and what isn't, with long debates at the time for who was tr00 or kvlt or not with mods who were on a powertrip. A good reminder of how bad forums were and how there were things about them that were better than the current web, it's not like it was all perfect. I disagree. They were such a great door into escapism and friendship for me, a standard guy from a small town in Italy with no metal friends at all until the internet came about. Forums in particular provided the opportunity of meeting people with very different backgrounds sharing similar music tastes, and it was also fun to argue about silly things like what is true and not true metal and getting banned by mods. I built amazing memories of road trips together, motorcycles, seeing bands and meeting each other somewhere basically every weekend.

Encyclopaedia Metallum was described by Matt Sullivan of Nashville Scene as "the Internet's central database for all that is 'tr00' in the metal world. Nevertheless, there are exceptions for bands which fall under disputed genres not accepted by the website. Encyclopaedia Metallum attempts to provide comprehensive information on each band, such as a discography, logos, pictures, lyrics, line-ups, biography, trivia and user-submitted reviews. The site also provides a system for submitting bands to the archives. The website is free of advertisements and is run completely independently. A couple years prior, HellBlazer had the idea of an encyclopedia for heavy metal and attempted to write each band's page using HTML. Although he gave up with that initial attempt, a fully automated site with contributions from its users was in the works. On 1 January , the site announced that bands with entirely digital discographies could now be submitted to the Archives, changing the site's decade-long policy of physical releases only. On 13 November , the number of bands listed in the database reached , The site has a tradition of April Fool's Day pranks that are sometimes taken seriously. This started in with the addition of Korn into the Metal-Archives and several dozen user reviews praising their first self-titled album, with the news article of the day claiming that the first album was metal enough for the site. A series of staged arguments between moderators appeared throughout the day on the site's forum. Despite the ability to bypass this image just by clicking on it, many people took the prank seriously and thought that Metal Archives had actually been shut down for promoting internet piracy. In , the prank consisted on the addition of several mostly praising reviews of an EP called Penis Metal released by Chilean black metal band Hades Archer, followed by the addition of the band's logo and pictures which included penis on them. The band's style was also changed to Penis Metal.

I think this must have been around May be a good rule for what determines how someone can enjoy things like small groups is how physical it is. Kind of a tangential brain-dump: Fora on the old web tended to be nominally devoted to a topic, but each had a massively thriving "Off-Topic", "General Discussion", or "Random" board where the overarching theme of the forum served more as a background ambience. Oh man I spent too much time here as a youngling debating what is true metal or not lol. Wikimedia Commons. See the thread's opening post for more information. Black metal? No, I do not agree. You can choose among the proposed items on the store homepage, or browse through the Collections or the menus to pick what you want. Id say that the well-kept gates of forums was a feature and the thing I miss most. Every spring and autumn, reviewers are encouraged to spend a week writing and submitting as many quality reviews as possible. Anno
