The Ship Tree is a root-and-branch diagram which shows a player all of the different ships which are available to them in the game. The tree helps players decide which skills to train for ships that they are interested in. It seems to be a more or less well accepted fact that the certificate system in EVE Online is less than entirely useful as it currently stands. Articles tend to stress relatively complicated ways of approaching what skills to train. Long descriptions of the skills and how they interrelate are quite important to understand, but for the beginning pilot, they tend to overwhelm. The game has a system that can help simplify the decision as to what skills you train by allowing you to focus not on the individual skills so much as the underlying foundations of what pilots end up doing in New Eden. This is the certificate system. But this too can be overwhelming to the new pilot. Because the game does not demand a certain progression or dictate roles and goals, the pilot is more or less left to her own devices. When she looks at the certificates, to choose wisely, she needs to know more or less what she wants to be when she grows up. This article explains and details the certificate system, explains how to use it to plan your training, and briefly argues why you should use the certificate system, at least in the beginning. Certificates are simply credentials that are assigned to you by CONCORD and a few other organisations when you have trained a specific number of skills at specific skill levels. Think of certificates just like certificates in IT training, or diplomas and degrees granted by universities and colleges. The skills gathered together represent, to some extent, a competence in some area, such as in the use of missiles or more general areas like 'prospecting. The certificates are grouped into eleven categories.
But, as you probably know by now, being able to fly a ship is not the same thing as being able to fly it well.
You have some at Mastery 1, some at 2, and a few at 0. Is Mastery an actual measuring stick for skills? Mastery is a carry-over from the old certificate system that suggested skills you would generally want when flying a ship. That said, it means very little. Allowing the alpha to train them would great too powerful of a character for free use, which is not What CCP wants. You also have to remember, this game is old. Mastery came long before alphas and was based on something older.

A useful metaphor might be the distinction between law school where you learn what the law is and the training you get in a law firm where you learn how to practice the law. Putting your cursor over the skill name will still, though, show you how long it will take you to obtain the required level. Most certificates have four grades: basic, standard, improved, elite. At least for flying spaceships now you can use the Ship Tree. This is the certificate system. The Core Competency certificate gathers the other five together. You will be trading these skills off against profession skills as well. When the window opens, you will be presented with a graphical tree of all of the ships within EVE. Train the skills you need for a particular ship or fitting, but do not slavishly train for a certificate without knowing why you are training that particular skill to that particular level.
