With former Cloud9 Academy top laner Kumo and ex-C9 support Zeyzal filling out the roster, Evil Geniuses were competitive to begin the Spring Split but seemed unlikely to seriously contend in the standings. On the public relations side, the team was more successful, attracting a lot of attention with their unique "Evil" branding. After a record over the first six weeks, the team turned a corner, and went over the remainder of the season to finish in a three-way tie for second place with Thieves and FlyQuest. Seeded into the final round of the ensuing tiebreaker, EG defeated Thieves to secure the higher seed going into playoffs.

EG's Dota 2 team won The International , receiving the largest prize payout in esports history at the time. The Onramp and the EG clan were very popular in the emerging gaming circuit, being on the West Coast and having access to a T1 internet connection while the rest of the world was still on dial-up.
