I'm traveling at 70 mph having a pretty good day when my pickup almost comes to a complete stop in heavy traffic. I'm looking in my rear-view mirror as I'm still trying to understand what the heck just happened, and I witness smoking rubber from other vehicles trying their best to get stopped. Fortunately, I was not rear-ended and everyone behind me looked to be okay.

The lead frame of the Ford F is an often overlooked but integral part of its function. Tracing its roots back in the 6R80 Mechatronic assembly, the latest 6R80 lead frame houses several electrical components necessary for the proper functioning of its transmission system. From to , Ford revamped some of its models, starting with the F, to the 6R80 lead frame. The ensuing update didn't go smoothly as planned though as it still retained some of the problems present in the 6R80 Mechatronic while creating new issues in the succeeding 6R80 lead frame. These are exactly what we will explore in this article. If you own an F produced before , the 6R80 Mechatronic works as an electrically conductive interface between the transmission control module TCM and solenoids in the valve body. The TCM essentially acts like a conductor, sending electrical signals from the onboard computer to the appropriate solenoid when necessary, based on data collected from various sensors in different sections of the vehicle. In effect, this allows for precise control over all aspects of gear shifting, such as speed, rate, and timing. The lead frame itself serves as an intermediary between the TCM and valve body by providing a reliable electrical path for these signals to travel through. Made up of copper wires with a thin insulation coating, the lead frame is designed to handle a certain amperage of current at any given time. It also has a built-in protection circuit that allows for fault detection and isolation in case of an electrical overload. The lead frame is responsible for providing the proper voltage to each solenoid so that it can function properly.

In April , Ford issued a recall for over , vehicles including the F with the 6R80 transmission. The recall was described very commonly and generally but you could understand from the notice that Ford is concerned with the speed sensor output the sensor in the lead frame, in your transmission. Also, Ford was going to make some software updates to avoid this problem in the future. The recall was motivated by quite a lot of issues with the transmission downshifting and then staying in that gear without shifting higher. Also, there were other things that could happen with your vehicle when this lead frame was malfunctioning. If your F transmission in models freaks out, it may be the lead frame issue and it may even be covered by the extended warranty. So, keep reading to find out more. So, in Ford, most likely, found that they had been making faulty lead frames. The lead frame is the unit that holds transmission sensors and wiring, in simple words.

Also 2 days before she said the gear selector on the dash was going through all the gears just driving down the road and the dash was glitching which sounds like a pcm or wiring issue. I apologise, but, in my opinion, you are mistaken. Let's discuss.
