Far Too Easy has already been the horse of a lifetime for David McColm but a big race scalp is something the Murwillumbah trainer still craves. His son of All Too Hard is a million dollar earner and has played a major part on some of Australia's biggest races days with a reputation as one of NSW country's best sprinters. But despite his terrific record and a win in a Country Championships qualifier last year, Far Too Easy has had a string of near misses on the big stage and richly deserves his feature moment. Far Too Easy has placed in multiple stakes races as well as in the past two editions of the Kosciuszko, finishing second and third behind Southern Districts flyer Front Page in each of the past two runnings. There have been a few runs like the Ramornie, his run was outstanding when he drew bad. Far Too Easy comes into The Hunter second up after he had to come from near last in The Kosciuszko before surging home late to finish two and a quarter lengths off Front Page at Royal Randwick.

Racing News. It was also Don Wardlaw who a few years ago influenced McColm to resume his training career after a lengthy hiatus, caused by a sudden and serious illness. I was out of action for two years. McColm recalls Wardlaw recommending he should resurrect his training career during a chat whilst having a cold ale. McColm spent two and a half years with Powell riding around the bush, and recalls his first winning ride was at Grafton; coincidentally where Far Too Easy qualified for the Country Championships Final at Randwick in April by winning the Northern Rivers heat. He then moved back to Queensland, and spent another couple of years with trainer Kevin Kedge at Bundamba Ipswich , again riding mainly at bush meetings. But his career in the saddle was never going to reach longevity. With his riding days over and, through meeting a contact, he applied and secured a job with Amalgamated Pest Control and learnt the ropes. He took up training on the side, initially at Doomben and later at Beaudesert and enjoyed good success. Whilst never despairing of training again sometime down the track, he bought five acres and started his own pest control business, putting his previous experience to good use. He recently sold the business as he got serious with training; Far Too Easy playing an important role in lifting him back into the spotlight. McColm has eight horses in work at present, and hopes to increase that to around 10 or 12 — but no more.

Little-known trainer David McColm fought his way back from a serious health scare which could have cost him his life, now he finds himself with a horse he is happy to knock back mega bucks for as he straps in for the ride. Unbeaten three-year-old Far Too Easy makes up half of McColm's stable of two horses but what he lacks in numbers, he makes up for in ability with four of his last six runners returning as winners. Winning two-from-two, Far Too Easy has been a revelation in lesser grade but such were the manner of his wins, it caught the attention of bloodstocks agents in Hong Kong who offered "big money" to lure the son of All Too Hard to the Asian racing mecca. A significant health scare caused him to give up training in before returning in May last year with a handful of horses. Formerly a jockey, McColm moved into pest control when he became too heavy to ride before starting his own successful business. It gives you more scope to buy a nice horse. There will hardly be a dry eye if David McColm's Far Too Easy can upstage his more-fancied rivals in Saturday's Magic Millions 3YO Guineas m after he knocked back seven-figure offers to sell to instead chase the dream. Suffering a cavernoma on his brain, McColm gave up training between and but after coming out the other side, the trainer has emerged from his brush with death with what he describes as the horse of a lifetime. With just a couple of horses in work, McColm doesn't have the firepower of the bigger stables but says it only enhances the dream going forward.
