Understanding the mechanisms underlying cytotoxic immunoglobulin G IgG activity is critical for improving therapeutic antibody activity and inhibiting autoantibody-mediated tissue pathology. While prior research highlights the important role of the mononuclear phagocytic system for removing opsonized target cells, it remains unclear which monocyte or macrophage subsets stemming from fetal or post-natal bone-marrow BM -associated definitive hematopoiesis are involved in target cell depletion. Our results demonstrate that liver-resident macrophages originating from either fetal or adult hematopoiesis play a central role in IgG-mediated depletion of opsonized target cells from the peripheral blood under steady-state conditions, highlighting the impact of the tissue niche and not macrophage origin for cytotoxic antibody activity. In the mammalian brain, highly specialized astrocytes serve as neural stem cells NSCs that divide and give rise to new neurons, in a process called neurogenesis. During embryonic development NSCs generate almost all neurons of the brain. Soon after birth the neurogenic potential of NSCs is highly reduced, and neurogenesis occurs only in two specialized brain regions called the neurogenic niches. Niche cells are essential to stem cells as they provide structural and nutritional support, and control fundamental stem cell decisions. Astrocytes, major components of the adult neurogenic niches, are evolving as important regulators of neurogenesis, by controlling NSC proliferation, fate choice, and differentiation of the progeny. Therefore, astrocytes contribute to neurogenesis in two ways: as NSCs and as niche cells. This review highlights the role of astrocyte-like NSCs during development and adulthood, and summarizes how niche astrocytes control the process of adult neurogenesis. Time-series analysis suggests that niche conservatism is enhanced during times of elevated nutrient flux, whereas niche evolution tends to occur after mass extinctions, fau niche.

The degree to which organisms retain their environmental preferences is of utmost importance in predicting their fate in a world of rapid climate change. Notably, marine invertebrates frequently show strong affinities for either carbonate or terrigenous clastic environments. This affinity is due to characteristics of the sediments as well as correlated environmental factors. We assessed the conservatism of substrate affinities of marine invertebrates over geological timescales, and found that niche conservatism is prevalent in the oceans, and largely determined by the strength of initial habitat preference. There is substantial variation in niche conservatism among major clades with corals and sponges being among the most conservative. Time-series analysis suggests that niche conservatism is enhanced during times of elevated nutrient flux, whereas niche evolution tends to occur after mass extinctions.

Macrotritopus defilippi Atlantic longarm octopus Photo credit: Chelsea O. Bennice, Ph. There are more than species of octopus living in diverse habitats that span coral reefs, seagrass beds, sand plains and polar ice regions where they feed on lower trophic levels. Coexistence has been well studied in many species, but seldom in cephalopods like octopuses. The aim of the study was to explore how Octopus vulgaris common octopus , a medium-sized octopus that is widely distributed in tropical and temperate seas worldwide and Macrotritopus defilippi Atlantic longarm octopus , a small species of octopus found in the Atlantic Ocean, Mediterranean Sea and in the Caribbean, coexist by examining their foraging habits and tactics, diet, behaviors and when they are active or inactive. Rigorous fieldwork from the study included direct observations via SCUBA diving combined with active and remote video recordings. What the researchers discovered, published in the Journal of Experimental Marine Biology and Ecology , is that very different behaviors and habits in these two species of octopus is exactly how these species coexist in a shallow Florida lagoon- even at high densities. Previously, the research team discovered that there is fine-scale habitat partitioning between these species, but they still inhabit the same general areas and could be utilizing multiple resource partitioning mechanisms at varying degrees. The diet, activity periods, and foraging strategies of the common octopus have not been studied at this South Florida lagoon and have never been studied in the presence of the Atlantic longarm octopus. For the Atlantic longarm octopus, there are no reports on diet or foraging strategies and only two reports on activity period, which are conflicting.

Florida Atlantic is a young university with a history of perpetual transformation. None of this is a coincidence. A strategic approach. An intentional effort to improve everything we touch: from our coastal ecosystems and our regional wellbeing, to the individual lives of each and every one of our students. To achieve so much success in such a short time: you could call it hard work. You could call it ambition. We call it The Atlantic Effect.

Publication types Research Support, Non-U. Published by Elsevier Inc. We assessed the conservatism of substrate affinities of marine invertebrates over geological timescales, and found that niche conservatism is prevalent in the oceans, and largely determined by the strength of initial habitat preference. The research found that the largest difference between the two groups was size and community involvement, with Houston as the larger group and the smaller South Florida group being more concerned with group activity. The study found that compared to the strong subversive element of the wearers in Japan, the United States community at large appears to be motivated by Lolita as a creative outlet.
