Earthquake which are quite unpredictable and have continuously made itself felt to the humans since the ancient times, have caused considerable loss of property and lives. The damages in earthquakes result from the same or similar reasons. Particularly, although there are many instruments for testingthe ground and the materials, produced in the building sector in the 20 th. In the study, first of all, some general information about the ill-construction and preventive methods have been given and than the reasons of the damages of the Kocaeli Earthquake, which occured in August the 17, and deeply affected the people of country and their effects on the various structures, have been examined. Also a suggestion for the repair methods of the slight damages in the buildings have been offered. In the research, presentations with graphics and tables have been made in order to show the architectural characteristics of the damaged buildings and to determine the type of damage these buildings have in the earthquake.
