Oatley Vineyard is tucked away down a winding lane to the north of the A39 between Nether Stowey and Cannington, just a few miles west of Bridgwater.

I was keen to catch up and meet the elusive James Cumming, winemaker of the Somerset vineyard, so I hopped in the car for what turned out to be his last tasting tour of the season before harvest. I was joined by a mixed group of individuals, from wine enthusiasts to curious locals. With awe-inspiring views of Glastonbury Tor in the distance, I was struck by the beauty and magic of the place. Owners James and Gill Cumming dreamt of planting a small vineyard on the steep slopes overlooking Glastonbury Tor when they arrived at the farm in Years passed and the idea was buried in the bustle of running a company, farming a flock of Suffolk sheep and bringing up a young family. Four years later James decided to take the plunge and enrolled for a Viticulture and Winemaking degree at Plumpton College in East Sussex and so began our journey into the wine industry. We planted the first parcel of Bacchus vines in and the main vineyard of Ortega and Pinot Noir the following year. Five years on and we have a range of wines for sale. Ortega is our signature variety and in we produced a classic and a barrel fermented version. Our wines can be ordered online here for delivery in working days.
